Celebrity Makeup Artist Robin Matthews gave great face to Kristen Stewart for the film “The Runaways” where she played ’70s rock icon Joan Jett. Now that the film is about to come out on DVD, we asked her for a few tips on creating a sexy smoked eye.

HOW TO FROM ROBIN ON HOW TO SMOKE IT UP:

*It’s all about eyeliner pencil. Apply generously and smudge away!

*I like to use a small brush to smudge, but you can also use a sponge tipped applicator or even a Q-tip if you’re in a pinch.

*The key to getting it so worn in is to apply, smudge, then repeat. Also, we think of a smokey eye like Joan Jett’s as black or brown, but it can be any color.

*Cherie Currie (played by Dakota Fanning) was one of the first to show us that. She did smokey eyes with all sorts of color combinations such as blue and copper. Both these ladies broke down barriers for a lot of the make-up styles we wear today. On the red carpet today, we see smokey eyes in violet, green, blue, gray…you name it.

*As for mascara and liner pencils, there are so many great ones out there. The two that I happened to use on The Runaways are Make-up For Ever Aqua Eyes and MAC Kohl pencil. My favorite mascaras at the moment are Chanticaille Faux Cils, Make-up For Ever Smokey Lash, and Dior Show.

*I prefer a natural lip with a smoked eye.
